If you answered yes to any of these then this new programme is for you.

This programme will help colleagues in special schools who are already in a leadership position or are taking on a new leadership role. It provides support in delivering an identified school priority whilst providing knowledge relating to the wider leadership role.

The programme and coaching sessions are designed to be supportive professional development tool. The programme will be delivered by a highly experienced former special school executive headteacher.

The purpose of the programme is to support delegates to work through a significant whole school priority. The structure of the programme will not only allow you to gain knowledge of leadership, drawing on evidence-based examples, current research and effective pedagogy, but also offer a structure to support them with a priority you are working on. The structure of the programme will also assist you to provide evidence that may be used in discussions with other senior leaders, governors/trustees and/or your line manager during performance management and/or supervision meetings.

What does the programme cover?

  • Session 1 – Exploration of projects and formulating a plan.
  • Session 2 – Reflection on resources or content necessary to deliver the plan.
  • Session 3 – Reflecting and reviewing delivery, building in adjustments and adaptations as required.
  • Session 4 – How to sustain impact over time.
  • Session 5 – Reflecting on impact and any further steps necessary.

Who is delivering the programme?

Tina Harvey OBE

Until July 2023, Tina was the head of an outstanding all age special school for children and young people with severe and profound learning difficulties including those with an additional diagnosis of autism. Tina held this post for over 30 years, during which time the school expanded its roll by 90%. Tina’s association with SSAT dates back many years to the DfE’s ‘specialist school’s initiative and includes more recently input into the SSAT’s Leading the outstanding special school programme.

Tina trained at Birmingham University and holds a Master’s Degree in Childhood Autism, and has spent all of her career working within the special education field. Tina was a National Leader of Education until her retirement from headship. Tina continues to work as a member of the South East South London Regional SEND team for Whole School SEND (nasen). Aside from special educational needs, Tina’s particular interests are school improvement including ethical leadership and leadership development at all levels including governance. Tina firmly believes in the power of coaching as a supportive professional development tool for colleagues.

This is a one year programme which will be delivered over 5 x 2hr sessions (once per halfterm). In addition delegates will be offered a maximum of three 1:1 coaching sessions of up to 30mins in duration.
